Watch those cotton candy clouds roll by!

In the last Blog posting we talked about the mid level or altos clouds.  Moving on through the atmosphere we finally get to the  lowest level of clouds.  These are called Stratus.  These are the clouds you think of that bring rain and snow.  They are close to the ground (below 6000 ft.) and are often associated with precipitation.  Get out your rain gear!  Chances are if your seeing this type of cloud stacking up in the sky rain or snow isn't far behind.
If your near the Rocky Mountains you might also frequentley see a cloud type called Cumulo Nimbus.  These Clouds can look like stratus clouds on the bottom but the tops may go as high as 50,000 feet into the upper atmosphere.  Some people call them "anvil shaped".  Cumulo Nimbus clouds are a sure sign of Thunderstorm activity and if your on a ridge line or high exposed area its time to hightail it to lower ground!
Tomorrow we will talk about lightening and just what you do in the case of a sudden storm in your neck of the woods....stay tuned and see you UNDER WESTERN SKIES!
